The simplest definition for a mandatory program is one that has a schedule. All programs that are mandatory will not show up in Run Advertised Programs (RAP). An Optional program is one that does not have a schedule and will always show up in RAP. Now, all Mandatory programs can also be Optional programs by having them show up in RAP. To do this there is a checkbox on the Schedule tab of the Advertisment dialog box. The checkbox is called “Allow users to run the program independently of assignments”. It is also possible for a program to become mandatory (and thus disappear from RAP) and not run. If a program is created as an optional program and then run manually in Monday, and then on Tuesday the program is given a schedule to run on Tuesday, the program will not re-run because is has already run previously. But, the program will disappear from RAP bacause the “Allow users to run…” checkbox is not checked by default. I hope this clears things up for you a little. — Thanks Scott Brimley [MSFT]
